The Volvo S90 Ambience Concept – a car that connects with your senses Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, today reveals the S90 Ambience Concept, an industry-first sensory experience that synchronises visuals, sound and scent to redefine in-car luxury. The S90 Ambience Concept, making its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show in China, is based on Volvo’s top-of-the-line S90 Excellence three-seater executive sedan and focuses on chauffeured passengers in the rear seat. The passengers can personalise the car’s atmosphere by using the intuitive smartphone app to choose one of seven visual themes synchronised with audio and scent. “The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses,” said Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars. “The design explores how people feel inside the car and enables them to influence their own mood and well-being.” The visual element transforms the car ceiling according to the selected theme – including Northern Lights, Scandinavian Forest, Swan Lake, Archipelago and Rain – each providing a different mood scaling from relaxing to invigorating. There is also a Nocturnal theme for resting and Freedom gives a boost of fresh and uplifting energy. The synchronised audio plays through the car’s Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system, which includes small tweeters in the headrest for an immersive sound experience. Each theme is matched with one of four bespoke scents, created by Byredo, which deploys simultaneously from a portal in the centre console. “We’re known for our human-centric approach to design and as an industry leader in advanced safety technology,” Robin Page said. “Ambience reinforces this and shows our broader focus on human care, which starts with safety and also extends to general well-being.” While the S90 Ambience is launching as a concept, Volvo Cars has the ambition to make it available in S90 Excellence production cars, to enhance its Excellence offer, especially in China. In 2017, Volvo sold more than 100,000 cars in China for the first time, which made a significant contribution to the company’s fourth consecutive year of record sales and growth. China is Volvo Cars’ largest single market and the company’s biggest marketplace for the S90 sedan. “The Ambience Concept was created primarily for the China market and provides a contrast to China’s sometimes hectic city environments,” said Martin Andersson, senior commercial product manager at Volvo Cars’ Special Vehicles department, which is responsible for the Excellence range. “The S90 Ambience Concept will reinforce our premium brand values in this important region.” 2018 2017 ambient light "SUBSCRIBE NOW"

Led by its excellent SUV range and backed up by the S90 saloon and V90 estate, the Swedish brand now has the style and substance to go toe-to-toe with any of its premium rivals. And now it has a genuine compact executive contender in the V60 – albeit only in estate form for the time being; an S60 saloon will follow later in the year. It’s Sweden’s latest take on the German executive saloon. After the ageing, slightly anonymous S80 comes the super slick S90. It takes the traditional three-box Volvo shape and brings it bang up to date with XC90 styling cues. It’s bold, but in a class dominated by sense and rationality, we like that a lot. Consider this a calm and serene E-Class alternative rather than an athletic, up-on-its-toes 5-Series rival. The aura of feel-good begins as soon as you climb in, with a lovely tactile ‘on/off’ switch as opposed to a starter button. Nice. Sharing its mechanicals with the XC90, it’s a neat and tidy thing to drive. The ride might be firmer than you expect, but otherwise this is a quiet, cossetting place to spend time. All of its controls are stress-free and there’s abundant grip and composure. Throw this it any commute and we guarantee you’ll notice your usual stresses evaporate away. Engine wise, you’ve a choice of two four-cylinder turbodiesels, with 187bhp and 232bhp tunes. The latter is better not only for moving the S90’s large frame around, but because it comes with clever turbo lag-beating technology and standard all-wheel drive. The lower tune makes do with front-drive. In time, the T8 petrol-electric hybrid from the XC90 – all 407bhp of it – will join the range. Next motorway cop car of choice, anyone? Here’s where it’s got the Germans licked, by deliberately going in a completely different direction to them. The controls manage an excellent trick of being quirky, yet ergonomically satisfying. The large portrait touchscreen takes some getting used to, but is superb once you’ve got your head around it. You can even hook it up to an optional 1,400 watt, 19-speaker stereo. The seats are sublime, too, and only add to the soothing feeling of being inside the S90. Plenty of room, too, as its stocky exterior dimensions might have you expecting. For the price of nicely specced four-cylinder S90, you can have a six-cylinder BMW 5-Series. Prices start at £32,555, but the one you want is a whisker under £40k. That it doesn’t feel bad value tells you of the quality on offer. Naturally, its lower cylinder count means the fuel economy figure is strong: 58.9mpg for the more powerful engine, with the entry-level car topping 60mpg while sliding into the cheaper tax brackets with 116g/km. For a 1.6-ton, 5m saloon, that’s damn good. Want a more assertive exterior? There’s an R Design option box awaiting you.

Luxury sedan gets a super luxurious interior - Features, Review Volvo is moving the production of the S90 from Sweden to China with the promise of making the luxury sedan the most “premium car ever made” in the world’s biggest automotive market. It’s a lot to live up to, but Volvo is confident that it’ll work, or at least confident enough to announce a top-of-the-line trim that pretty much includes anything and everything that Volvo has to offer. The model is called the S90 Excellence, and if the name sounds familiar, that’s because the car’s breathtaking interior was already previewed in concept form back in April at the Beijing Motor Show. It’s not a concept anymore because the S90 Excellence is going to hit the market in 2017. The Chinese market is expected to get first dibs, but since the model is going to be exported all over the world, there’s a possibility that the U.S. and European markets will get theirs too at some point in the future. In the meantime, the S90 Excellence, together with the standard S90, will make its debut at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show later this month. So what makes the S90 Excellence a major step up in luxury for Volvo? The short answer is “Lounge Console,” which is basically the same interior we saw in Beijing as a concept, only it’s actually set to be used in production form. Care for a rear-seat touch screen control interface, handmade crystal glasses, and a built-in refrigeration compartment? Yep. That’s what you get – and many more – with the Volvo S90 Excellence. Continue after the jump to read more about the Volvo S90 Excellence. What makes the Volvo S90 Excellence special The Volvo S90 Excellence will be based on the long-wheelbase S90 L, a model that’s only being sold in China. So in case you’re wondering why the S90 Excellence looks particularly longer than the standard S90, that’s because the S90 Excellence is effectively a limousine, and an über luxurious one at that. The exterior doesn’t change too much other than its overall dimensions, but the interior is where owners will find a world of difference. The S90 Excellence is effectively a limousine, and an über luxurious one at that. Essentially, the S90 Excellence’s Lounge Console cabin is a mobile hotel that can morph into a luxury work station or an entertainment center with a few pushes of some buttons. The first thing you’ll notice about it is that it doesn’t have a front passenger seat. In its place is a small compartment that contains a few items, most notably a large touch screen that can be used for a variety of functions. The compartment can apparently store a pair of shoes too so that’s another neat addition. Most of the offerings can be found in the rear section of the car where massaging rear seats can be reclined for supreme relaxation. There’s also a rear center console that has its own refrigeration compartment inside the armrest. Notice those champagne glasses too? Those are handmade crystal glasses from noted Swedish glassmaker Orrefors. The console also contains a folding table that be accessed and positioned in front of the rear seat, providing a usable work space for the occupant. The S90 Excellence’s Lounge Console cabin is a mobile hotel that can morph into a luxury work station or an entertainment center with a few pushes of some buttons. Engine choices for the S90 Excellence are limited to just the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid setup, which puts out an output of 410 horsepower. That should be enough to justify the ridiculous opulence of a car with matching performance characteristics. Before its reveal, the first official pictures of the S90 were revealed on Wednesday, 2 December 2015. The S90 was unveiled to the public in January 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The S90's design was well-received, winning the Production Car Design of the Year award for 2015.
While not a direct successor to the second generation S80, the S90 replaces it as the flagship sedan in Volvo's lineup. Several trim levels are available, ranging from Momentum to Inscription. In July 2016 an optional, cosmetic R-Design package was announced. A long wheelbase version was announced and is available in the United States.
