Declaration Grooming Bandwagon

This soap review features the 2017 artisan of the year, Declaration Grooming (https://www.declarationgrooming.com/). Declaration (formerly known as L&L Grooming and Declaration Brushworks) is well known for their range of shaving soap, aftershave care and hand tied premium badger knots and hand turned brush handles. The company has not rested at all, even through their move from Georgia to Michigan. Aside from purchasing direct, their software is also available through Maggard Razors (http://www.maggardrazors.com/). Bandwagon is Declaration’s nod to the classic and very common barbershop genre of scent. The scent is an interpretation of Declaration’s trips to the local barber with their grandfather. The scent is a musky, powdery accord that is supported by creamy sandalwood. The scent notes are listed as: Bergamot, Musk, Sandalwood, Lavender, Camphor, Coumarin, Tarragon and Anise. The scent for me, opens powdery and creamy before some muskiness comes into play. This is a masculine barbershop that is unique enough to buy, no matter how many barbershop scents you own. The scent strength is light to mid, by design actually. Scents with some similarity are: Wholly Kaw Man From Mayfair and Reef Point Soaps Command Presence. Declaration’s soap base is among the very best performing soap bases on the market. Some have trouble dialing in the lather because it simply loves to be drowned with water. The results when dialed in though stand in the rare air of greatness though. Excellence in all metrics. "Yogurty" dense cushion, hella slickness and residual slickness and spa like moisturizing post shave is what you can expect. With an ingredients like this (Stearic Acid, Water, Potassium Hydroxide, Avocado Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Bison Tallow, Mango Seed Butter, Castor Oil, Fragrance, Sodium Hydroxide, Lanolin, Bentonite Clay, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Extract, Salix Alba L. (White Willow) Bark Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid,) its no wonder. The Shavescore for this soap base comes in at 95. Similar soap bases in terms of performance are: Wholly Kaw (donkey milk) and Catie’s Bubbles (luxury soap). Barrister & Mann Sinfonia

Barrister & Mann (https://www.barristerandmann.com/) recently released it’s traditional February special edition soap. This year, they moved away (hopefully temporarily) from Night Music and unveiled Sinfonia. This special edition is available now through February 28, 2018 and can be purchased direct or through several third party retailers, such as Maggard Razors (http://www.maggardrazors.com/). Sinfonia is a relatively simplistic scent, especially considering Barrister & Mann’s usual deeply complex accords. This two note accord consists of jasmine and apricot. The scent opens with the jasmine, which to my nose is a sharp, aromatic white floral. This beautiful scent is then enveloped in a light, refreshingly sweet smell of apricot. Despite this scent’s simplicity, on the surface, it really shines and shows a mastery of balance that few artisans in this community have. Scent strength is mid both off the sample and remains mid through the lather building and shave. The most similar scent I can find to compare this to is Dapper Dragon Jasmine & Vanilla. This special edition is produced in the glissant base (Potassium Stearate, Aqua, Glycerin, Sodium Stearate, Potassium Tallowate, Sodium Tallowate, Potassium Ricinoleate, Potassium Shea Butterate, Sodium Ricinoleate, Coconut Milk, Fragrance/Parfum, Sodium Shea Butterate, Carthamus tinctorius hybrid (Hybrid Safflower) Seed Oil, Potassium Palm Kernelate, Allantoin, Lanolin, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Citrate, Tocopherol Acetate, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein). This base is well known for its excellence in performance in all wet shaving metrics. The soap loads easily into a brush and has a very wide hydration range. The ideal lather is that of the consistency of sour cream, with a nearly identical density and sheen. The slickness and residual slickness are among the absolute best and the post shave leaves absolutely no need for a post shave product. The resulting shavescore for this base is 97. For similar performance experience, I suggest; Catie’s Bubbles and Talbot Shaving. Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary

Saponificio Varesino (http://www.saponificiovaresino.com/it/en/) is an Italian artisan based in Brebbia in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy. The company was established in 1945 by Dante Bardelli and it has a long standing tradition of making vegan based, hard puck shaving soap. In addition to shaving soap, they also sell bath bars and shaving accessories. 70th Anniversary is a chypre scent with notes of Orange, Bergamot, Sage, Rose, Clove, Hydrangea Cedarwood and Sweet Patchouli. This is a bright and pleasant scent that opens citrusy with bergamot and orange before the floral notes of hydrangea and rose pop into the accord. The scent is delicate and inoffensive in the truest sense. Scent strength on this soap is mid off the puck and moves to mid-light upon lathering. Comparable scents that can be found in “wetshavedome” are Lebelle Soaps Classico and Catie's Bubbles Mille Chypre. Saponificio Varesino utilized their Beta 4.1 soap base for this release, which debuted back in 2015. This vegan base is touted to provide superior slickness and post shave. Ingredients are listed as: Sodium Cocoate, Potassium Stearate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Rapeseedate Sodium, Sodium Sunflower, Aqua / Water / Eau, Shorea stenoptera Seed Butter, Fraxinus Ornus (Manna Ash) Sap Extract, Parfum / Fragrance, Ternifolia Macadamia Seed Oil, Sucrose Cocoate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Xanthan Gum, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Tocopheryl Acetate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Citric Acid, Benzyl Salicylate , Limonene, Citral, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, Linalool. The hard puck loads easily in both natural fiber brushes as well as synthetic brushes. The soap is not overly thirsty but does reward the user with a merengue like lather with proper hydration and agitation. The slickness on this soap, both primary and residual are very good, not elite, but better than average by a substantial margin. Post shave is good, but not as good as I expected based on the claims and other reviews I encountered. This soap base receives a shave score of 85, which places it alongside soap bases such as Dr. Jon’s and Blackship Grooming. This soap review features the 2016 artisan rookie of the year, L&L Grooming (https://www.landlgrooming.com/) and killer post shave master, Chatillon Lux (https://chatillonlux.com/). Even with the honors of being the best new artisan on the scene in 2016, Scott, from L&L Grooming continued his assault on wet shaver’s wallets by opening Declaration Brushworks (https://www.declarationbrushworks.com/), the premiere U.S. based artisan brush maker who hand ties every knot. L&L Grooming soaps are also available at Maggard Razors. Chatillon Lux is one of, if not the top aftershave artisan in the wet shaving world. Their collaborations are always successful and highly sought after.

Bon Vivant is a warm and spicy blend with a crack of sharp citrus. The scent notes feature caramel, birch tar, black pepper, maple syrup, vanilla, patchouli, neroli, petitgrain, yuzu citrus, ginger, anise, juniper berry, white grapefruit, wormwood and coriander. What does all this boil down to? For me it opens with herbaceous citrus and some black pepper before the sweetness of the maple syrup and caramel enter the fold. At its base, it fades back to earthy where the patchouli, juniper berry and petitgrain present themselves. Scent is mid-strong both off the container and through the shave. Similar scents on the market include; Mickey Lee Soapworks Unforgiven or Phoenix & Beau Sanskrit.

L&L Grooming’s Bison tallow soap base is among the very best performing soap bases on the market. Some have trouble dialing in the lather because it simply loves to be drowned with water. The results when dialed in though stand in the rare air of greatness though. Above average in all metrics. "Yogurty" dense cushion, hella slickness and residual slickness and spa like moisturizing post shave is what you can expect. With an ingredients like this (Stearic Acid, Water, Potassium Hydroxide, Avocado Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Bison Tallow, Mango Seed Butter, Castor Oil, Fragrance, Sodium Hydroxide, Lanolin, Bentonite Clay, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Extract, Salix Alba L. (White Willow) Bark Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid,) its no wonder. Similar soap bases in terms of performance are: Mickey Lee Soapworks and Tallow + Steel.
