5 Signs Electric Cars May Be The Future

Are Electric Cars The Future? Will The Future Of Transport Be Electric? What Energy Source Will Power Future Cars? My New Car Is Electric - https://youtu.be/FN0g4fDq8MQ Speaking with Lucas di Grassi, Formula E champion and CEO of Roborace, he brought up the point that the smaller the device, the more it makes sense (phones, laptops) to use battery power. The larger the device, the less it makes sense (cargo ships, planes). Cars rest in the middle, but there’s a very logical case for it as energy density improves. Speaking with Nicki Shields, she brought up that electric cars get "greener" with time. As electricity production becomes more efficient, the carbon footprint of an electric vehicle improves. ICE get worse with time. Modern internal combustion engines generally trend towards improving fuel economy, so older vehicles on a relative scale have an increasingly negative impact from an energy consumption standpoint. US Energy Consumption - Renewables Increasing: https://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/monthly/pdf/sec1_7.pdf Cleaner with time: https://blog.ucsusa.org/dave-reichmuth/new-data-show-electric-vehicles-continue-to-get-cleaner Speaking with Vinit Patel, chief engineering of Mahindra racing, he brought up that location matters, if hydrogen improves it could make sense. The practicality of electric cars is location dependent. For Urban areas with high congestion, and relatively shorter travel distances, EVs make sense. The infrastructure is somewhat already available, allowing for home charging, work charging, etc. As you get further away from cities, EVs make less practical sense, and hybrid solutions seem superior. The infrastructure already exists for hybrids today, and allows for limitless distances. Hydrogen currently is expensive to produce, and overall less energy efficient for the full cycle of production to consumption. However, it’s extremely abundant, so if there are cost effective ways to use it, it could make financial sense to use it (energy density advantages, range advantages). Why Ford's Flathead V8 Engine Died

How Ford's Flathead V8 Engine Works, And Why It Disappeared Why Can't Pushrod Engine Rev High? https://youtu.be/S9E2nCXNHU8 EE Shirts! - http://bit.ly/2BHsiuo Recommended Books & Car Products - http://amzn.to/2BrekJm Subscribe for new videos every Wednesday! - https://goo.gl/VZstk7 Ford Flathead V8 Engine Model: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2537602 In 1932 Ford introduced the mass market to V8 engines, sticking a 3.6L flathead V8 producing a terrifying 65 horsepower in the Model 18. The engine lived on until 1953, until being finally replaced in 1954. What was so special about the flathead V8? Mostly the simplicity of the design. Instead of complicated cylinder heads, they were now simply a single piece of relatively flat metal (flat head). This drove the cost of the engine down, allowing it to be built and sold on a larger scale. The challenge, however, is that the engine suffered from poor airflow, especially at high RPM. In this video we'll discuss the valvetrain, and how the flathead design impedes airflow for high revving, high power engines. Not only was airflow a challenge, but the compression ratio was difficult to increase without further restrictions on airflow. Ultimately, improved technologies replaced the flathead in 1954. The latest addition to the Engineering Explained garage is an electric car! In the United States, electric cars make up less than 2% of the overall market, yet that number has nearly doubled since 2013. That is to say, the electric car revolution is coming, and I'll be experiencing life with an electric car before the majority of folks make the jump.

While in today's world electric cars don't make perfect sense for every scenario, they do offer plenty of advantages over gasoline or diesel powered cars. They have instant acceleration when you put your foot down, peak torque from zero RPM, they're far more energy efficient - meaning you spend less on "refilling the tank," and they don't have any emissions. This makes EVs great for city environments where travel distances are relatively short, and congestion is high. Check out the video for more information on the EV series I'm starting with Formula E!
