This family hauler seats seven adults and can swallow up to 94 cubic feet of cargo. The stately exterior and luxe interior do justice to the Mercedes-Benz name, and prodigious acceleration will strike fear into the hearts of lesser automobiles. Competition is stiff, but the GLS-class holds its own, which is why it earned a place among the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs. GLS-class buyers are confronted with a choice between two powerful, competent powertrains, and either one provides ample motivation for this Benz brawler. The base engine found in the GLS450 is a purring and muscular 362-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, while a stout 449-hp twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8 powers the GLS550. Both engines pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which is optimized for highway cruising. The nine-speed shifts smoothly and rarely stumbles, but the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 is the real star—in our testing, it was as quick as the competition’s V-8s.

2018 Audi A8 L Quattro Exclusive Sedan Full Overview

While the Audi A8 has always seemed to wear an understated tuxedo with its sleek looks and undeniable style, the third-generation model has been in circulation for the last seven years. It’s one of the last few models to still sport Audi’s tall, square grille and it’s time for a serious revamp. So, it was no surprise when we started seeing prototypes hitting the streets and the Nürburgring, and now – after a quick peak at the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere, Audi has laid it all out on the table. As is the usual case with Audi, overall design changes are somewhat minimal, but it does get the new, wide grille, a pair of sexy headlight units, and repositioned body lines that make it even more appealing than ever before. Inside, there’s a completely redesigned dashboard with new technology, updated user interface controls, and it finally gets Audi’s new piloted driving system which allows remote parking and semi-autonomous driving in highway traffic. To go along with this, the A8 gets a revises suspension system that includes all-wheel steering and active suspension. Topping off the new generation is a pair of reengineered, turbocharged V-6 engines that will eventually be joined by a pair of V-8 powerplants and a 6.0-liter W-12 for the range-topping model. So, with all that in mind, one can’t help but wonder how the new A8 will stand up against the new Mercedes S-Class and the new BMW 7 Series. It’s obviously going to be a tough call as to which is better, but Audi is coming to the party prepared to throw down. So, let’s dive on in and take a better look at the new Audi A8 – there are lots of details to cover. What we have here is a deceptively fresh look that makes it easy to forget that the last A8 was as attractive as it was. Now, when it comes to the side profile, there isn’t a lot of change. In fact, it looks like a genetic engineer simply played with some DNA to make some minor mutations as opposed to an engineer coming up with a fresh design. From the beltline up, the new A8 looks nearly identical, with the only noticeable difference being the slightly taller mirrors with smaller corner mounts. Otherwise, the rear stationary window, shape of the window cutouts and the roofline have practically carried over. The window trim along the top is now a bit thicker, so it does stand out more, but that’s about it. Check it out: What has change along the side profile is the way the lower body lines are executed. In the previous model, the contour of the front fender fed into the body line that ran below the belt line. Well, some genius over at Audi (and I’m not being sarcastic) decided to base the uppermost body line on the hood line to provide a fresh look. The contour of the front fender still leads into its own body line, but it slowly fades away and blends into the doors just below the mirrors – it’s really a nice touch! Down below, the lower body line has been enhanced in size and angled just slightly upward in the rear, giving the car a commanding look from the side without sacrificing a level ride height. The new A8 is set to hit showrooms in a few months as we roll into fall of 2017. It will start out at €90,600 for the standard-length model, and €94,100 for the A8 L. Those figures compute to $103,968 and $107,984, respectively. As a reference, That represents an increase on the German market of €6,600 for the A8 and €4,200 for the A8L. the current Audi A8L here in the U.S. starts out at $82,500, so expect a pricing increase here in the U.S. of around $5,000 or so to around $87,000.

The 2018 GLS-Class is Mercedes-Benz's flagship SUV. It's available with three engines, a twin-turbo V6 (362 horsepower, 369 pound-feet of torque) in the GLS 450; a twin-turbo V8 (449 hp, 516 lb-ft) in the GLS 550; and an even more powerful V8 (577 hp, 561 lb-ft) in the barnstorming GLS 63 AMG variant. The GLS 450 and GLS 550 are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the GLS 63 AMG comes with a seven-speed automatic. All GLS models feature Mercedes-Benz's all-wheel-drive system called 4Matic.

Still, outright performance is not what the GLS is about. Rather, the GLS is designed to accommodate passengers and cargo with features such as second-row seats with adjustable recline. And, in a pinch, seats can be stowed and moved for flexible cargo requirements. With optional features, all of this can be done electronically at the touch of a button.

Thanks to its street-oriented suspension, the GLS rides smoothly over the road, giving drivers and passengers one of the most serene experiences in its class. And yet an available body roll control system and sport-oriented suspension can firm up the handling.

Some buyers may hesitate once they see the price, particularly if it's a well-equipped example. And others may find the size and dynamics too big and too soft, respectively. But the GLS is levels above the cutthroat midsize SUV and crossover market, and it dominates in the full-size segment by bringing an S-class to the SUV fight.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is a seven-passenger, large luxury SUV that's offered in three models. The GLS 450 is the base model that's well equipped but doesn't include many of the higher-end features you might expect in an luxury SUV. The GLS 550, ups the power and includes many features that are optional on the GLS 450. Finally, performance aficionados will be drawn to the ultra-powerful AMG GLS 63. All three feature standard all-wheel drive.

The GLS 450 comes with a turbocharged V6 engine (362 hp, 369 lb-ft), 19-inch alloy wheels, a self-leveling air suspension, power-folding and auto-dimming side mirrors, LED running lights and taillights, roof rails, a power liftgate and Mbrace Connect remote vehicle access (via smartphone app; includes remote start).

Interior highlights include premium vinyl upholstery, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), driver-seat memory settings, a power-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, genuine wood trim and dual-zone automatic climate control. Technology highlights include the COMAND infotainment interface (with both a control knob and a touchpad), an 8-inch central display, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, and a sound system that features HD radio and dual USB ports.

An available Premium package adds keyless entry and ignition, a power front passenger seat with memory settings, lighted door sills and multicolor ambient lighting, a navigation system with real-time traffic, voice controls, Apple CarPlay and satellite radio, as well as lane keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring.

The Lighting package bundles adaptive LED headlights and automatic high beams. The Parking Assist package adds front and rear parking sensors, an automated parallel parking system and a surround-view camera system. Also available are three-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with a CD/DVD player, an SD card reader, and multicontour front seats that add a massaging feature and adjustable side bolsters and shoulder supports.

The GLS 550 starts with all of the above as standard, but it uses a twin-turbo V8 engine (449 hp, 516 lb-ft). It also adds 21-inch alloy wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, sporty exterior styling cues, soft-close doors and upgraded interior trim (including wood steering-wheel inserts). The optional Night package throws in 21-inch black wheels and gloss-black exterior accents.

Optional items on both the GLS 450 and GLS 550 include a panoramic sunroof, heated second-row seats, diamond-quilted leather upholstery and the Driver Assistance package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and front and rear collision mitigation. Also available is an Off-Road package that includes an upgraded multimode terrain selector, a dual-range transfer case and front underbody protection; on the GLS 450, it also adds the GLS 550's standard adaptive dampers.
