2018 Honda Clarity EV Test Drive, Review, and Interior! I got invited to a Honda Clarity EV event in Orange County. I was a fun but quick event. I was not able to take it onto the highway speeds just around the block at about 40+ miles per hour. Overall it was a well designed and well equipped car. Same platform as the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, just simpler without the fuel cell. Overview --- The most important stats : EV range is estimated to be 89 miles per charge, charge time will be L1 19 hours, L2 6 hours, L3 80% at 30 mins. According to the information consultants it was LEASE ONLY at $229 / month for 36 months with $2000 down. I wonder what they are going to do with this compliance car afterward... perhaps in a museum... I personally would have liked to see a 200 mile range ev or 50 mile Plugin hybrid with 45+ mpg gas. Looks from the front it looks like some robot mecha from an Anime or 80s transformers, from the back it looks like the designers had much too modeling clay to play with - it looks heavy in the back - it kinda reminds me of that station wagon from Robocop 1 - 6000SUX . VIsibility nice - split rear window, honda right camera, lots of windows Ergo good except the drive buttons will take some getting used to, need to be tactal so i can press without taking my eyes off the road. Looks sexy in concept Paddles on steering wheel changes the regen mode and levels. DId not have a regen on demand paddle like the Chevy Volt which i have a habit of using instead of brakes. Nor a B mode like the prius or prime. Cruise controls are on the right and Sound and menu controls are on the right Climate controls are in the center stack with dials and buttons There are rear vents. Power seats Storage, glove box and center box, along with the under the center console for charging USB device at 2 amp. Cup holders in the front have a height adjustment for smaller drinks. Sunglass holder is next to the garage opener (thanks honda - my Volt is missing this) The rear storage has smart phone holders, which i bet kids will be stuffing other things into. And rear cup holders. The rear trunk has storage under the floor board for charger, there is not spare tire nor is there any space for one. The side has a compartement for fix a flat. There is a small pass thought to the back seats. The Clarity Fuel Cell did not have this. The EV did. I would have preferred a larger pass through. Living with a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid with has no pass trought it was difficult to carry super long or large items. If you really need a Honda EV with 89 mile range, this is it. If you want something more useful, wait for the Plugin Hybrid version, or get a Prius Prime or Chevy Volt.
Enjoyed checking out the upcoming all electric version of the Honda Clarity Electric. You can sign up for to check it out as well at hondaclarityevent.com As we have the Clarity Fuel Cell I wanted to see what the differences are and overall there's not many as far as exterior and interior design. Range is approx 89 with Fast Charging standard which will give you 80% charge in 30 minutes. The backseats fold down unlike in the Fuel Cell version. The opening between trunk and backseat area is quite small however. See video. The car takes off like a rocket. A light front end (engine compartment only about half full (see video) and lots of torque equals burnouts galore even at 30mph plus. This Electric version seems more nimble and lighter than our Fuel Cell. Our acceleration is more fluid and not throw you back in seat like pure electrics with lots of torque. Also the doors seem heavier in our Fuel Cell. If you can make the shorter range work, as far as the quality of the vehicle goes, you won't be disappointed. Will be lease only. As of 6/11/17 at 12:30p the lease price will be $269.00 per month for 36 months, 20k a year, 1999 down including first months payment + tax and license. Car qualifies for $2500.00 state rebate in California and HOV access.
