Canaletto: A collection of 157 paintings (HD)

Canaletto: A collection of 157 paintings (HD) Description: "Italian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal who came to be known across the world by his nickname Canaletto was one of the most prolific artists of the 18th century. He made a name for himself as a supreme painter of cityscapes. Canaletto’s father was a painter by profession as well and during his childhood in Venice he was trained by his father, before he went to work in Rome. However, after a short stint in Rome, he returned to Venice, learnt the nuances of topographical painting and drawing cityscapes from an older painter and started working with wealthy patrons who used to give him very lucrative commissions. One of the most remarkable works by Canaletto of his early years as a painter of cityscapes was ‘The Stonemason’s Yard’ that showed the sort of vision that he had as a painter and over the years his work was punctuated with bold colours and attention for detail that made him very popular. His work became a huge draw among rich English gentleman of the era who bought his paintings when they were in Italy on holiday and it was due to this lucrative market that Canaletto even moved to England at one point in his career." Mark Rothko: A collection of 312 works (HD)

Mark Rothko: A collection of 312 works (HD) Description: "There are many painters and artists who emerged after the World War II but Mark Rothko was undoubtedly one of the most highly-regarded painters to emerge from the New York art scene. A bright student at school he soon won a scholarship at Yale University. However the Yale community did not impress him much and he dropped out of College to discover the city of New York. Discovering the artistic society of New York he finally found his niche and likeminded people who inspired him to paint. Working with several eminent artists and teaching some of the most artistic young minds, he developed a style of his own. Rothko, slowly moved away from representational art and started thinking of art as a medium of expressing the emotional and religious experiences. From surrealism to the much noted ‘multi-form’, his art took various forms and shapes. The latter slowly transcended into large rectangular fields of colour which eventually became his trademark. A key figure in modern 20th century painting, Rothko lived his life as a celebrity and he justified his reputation as a tortured artist by slashing his own arms and bleeding to death. Thomas Cole: A collection of 134 paintings (HD)

Thomas Cole: A collection of 134 paintings (HD) Description: "Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was primarily a landscape artist, who developed his style of painting from European art masters and by studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His sketches and paintings were of the Catskills, White Mountains, Adirondacks, and the coast of Maine, yet he also produced many allegorical works, painted in a series. Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School, an American art movement, which promoted realistic and detailed portrayals of American landscapes and its wilderness. Painting with a romantic and naturalistic style, Cole became a famous painter of landscapes and an important study of painting style to other artists. Frans Hals: A collection of 164 paintings (HD)

Description: "Frans Hals was probably born in Antwerp. It is likely that his parents were among the Protestants who fled from Catholic Flanders to the northern Netherlands after the Spanish took Antwerp in 1585. The earliest evidence of the presence of the Hals family in Haarlem is the record of the baptism in 1591 of Frans's brother, Dirck Hals, who also became a painter.

Between 1600 and 1603 Hals was a pupil of the Haarlem mannerist painter Karel van Mander. In 1610 Hals became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. His earliest surviving dated portrait, of Jacobus Zaffius, is dated 1611. There must have been earlier works that either have not come down to us or have not yet been identified. Some scholars now accept the Banquet in a Park, destroyed in World War II, as a work by Hals painted about 1610, on the basis of the free brushstroke that characterizes his work."

Some 250 paintings by Hals still exist, of which almost 200 are portraits. Except for two pictures representing the Evangelists St. Luke and St. Matthew, the rest are genre subjects, mostly portraitlike single figures, almost all in half or three-quarter length.
