► Borgward BX7 - Driving footage

The time-honoured German automobile brand Borgward is returning to the world stage. Borgward has unveiled two world premieres at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main: the BX7 SUV and the TS version of the BX7. Walker said that Borgward is scheduled to be launched in Germany and the rest of Europe sometime within the next two years. The company is to introduce its first vehicles to the Chinese and other emerging markets in the first half of 2016. Walker described the current developments on the Chinese market as a process of normalisation. “China remains a growth market, particulary in the SUV segment”, he added. The first Borgward plant is about to be completed in China. The Borgward BX 7 AWD T-GDI is equipped with a conventional all-wheel drive system and a 224 horsepower (165 kW) direct-injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. However, Borgward will also offer a model with a compelling alternative drive system: the Borgward BX 7 PHEV. This plug-in hybrid (PIH) demostrated at IAA, boasts a system output of 401 horsepower (295 kW), as well as a torque booster that results in a system torque of 650 Nm. The model has a range of 55 kilometres in the all-electric mode, and its NEDC fuel consumption amounts to 2.26 l/100 km. Here, a direct-injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-engine powers the front axle via a seven-stage dual clutch transmission. The rear axle is driven by an electric motor that is linked to the front-axle drive system via a sophisticated control unit. This intelligent all-wheel drive system uses a “virtual drive shaft” to mobilize torque at the electrically driven rear axle whenever energy-efficiency, handling or safety considerations require it. Nine plug-in hybrid operating modes are available to the driver. These modes are activated either automatically or else via a rotary/push-button controller in the centre console, whereby each mode is depicted on both the central 12.3-inch media touchscreen and the dashboard display. The normal PIH modes, such as energy recovery, all-electric driving and booster, are supplemented by an off-road programme that enhances the vehicle’s assertiveness in rough terrain. 2017 Borgward BX5 SUV Interior and Exterior Overview

Despite the heavy camouflage, there are quite a number of details to glance at. First of all, the headlamps are in plain sight and unless we’re looking at prototype units, they’re quite different than the one seen on the BX7. The same goes for the front grille, which seems similar to the BX7’s as far as shape goes, but sports a different slat configuration. These are angled toward the sides and are finished in chrome. Given that a concept version of the SUV is reportedly set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, this test vehicle should be pretty close to the final show car. If that is the case, than the BX5 should be a significant departure from the BX7 design-wise, and employ a more mundane appearance. The BX5’s cabin remains a mystery. But judging by the BX7’s, which featured an impressive amount of premium appointments for a China-built vehicle, I’m guessing that the BX5 should boast soft-touch surfaces, leather-wrapped seats, contrast stitching, and some aluminum inserts. At least in its range-topping trim. The BX7 also has a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Apple and Android connectivity and a WiFi hot-spot function, but it remains to be seen whether the BX5 will get similar features. Borgward Borgward may go with a more affordable package, but it all depends on where this crossover will be offered. If it makes it to Europe as rumored, these features will be mandatory in the premium segment.

Even back in the 1950s, particularly sporty Borgward models were given the initials “TS”. Borgward continues this tradition with the introduction of the BX7 TS Limited Edition.

With their typical wing lines, the muscular and broad masculine shoulders enhance the energy of the body’s sides and extend the vehicle’s extravagantly sporty look, which is introduced at the front end. Above the sills, an elongated wing profile accentuates the sense of thrust that the Borgward BX7 TS Limited Edition conveys even when it is stationary. Classic offroad characteristics such as generous ground clearance, short body overhangs, and a high beltline all enhance the model’s SUV credentials and signal its ability to master many different types of terrain.

Intuitive user friendliness, state-of-the-art infotainment, a high degree of networking with Internet access and extensive online services are all integral components of the Borgward brand philosophy. The B-Link Intelligent Connectivity System offers a high level of user friendliness in the BX7 TS Limited Edition. Depending on their preferences, the drivers have the choice whether they want to access and operate the infotainment menus using the direct access buttons, turn and press controls positioned in the centre console or the 12.3 inch touchscreen.

With its comprehensive “B-Safe” safety concept the Borgward BX7 Limited Edition meets all the requirements with regards to maximum safety for its occupants. Active safety features can preventively identify potential hazards and therefore help avoid accidents. The vehicle structure and restraint systems also give the SUV the potential to pass international crash tests and safety ratings with flying colours.
Systems such as the 360° dome camera also make handling the Borgward SUV even more comfortable particularly in confusing situations and help prevent minor damage. Parallel and diagonal parking manoeuvres are no problem at all and drivers can complete tight shunting manoeuvres in a narrow car park or in confusing terrain to the centimetre. And Borgward drivers don’t need to take narrow exits blind as the front and rear camera makes crossing pedestrians, cyclists and cars visible on the central display.
The body with its highly stable passenger cell and defined deformable barriers at the front and rear is the reliable foundation for superb occupant protection. Crucial body sections are reinforced with high-strength, ultra high-strength or hot-rolled steel. Should, however, the worst come to the worst, several load paths distribute the impact energy in the event of a head-on, side or rear crash and therefore ensure that the deceleration values that are configured exactly to the passive safety equipment are as balanced as possible.
So that the passive safety equipment remains as inactive as possible, the Borgward BX7 TS Limited Edition offers several preventive driver assistance systems that can prevent accidents as part of the “B-Safe” concept. These include, for example, the blind spot alert, road sign assistant or fatigue alert.
