Ivan Shishkin: A collection of 352 paintings (HD) Description: "The works of this outstanding artist enjoy vast popularity in Russia; the best of them have become the classics of Russian landscape painting. During 40 years of his artistic activity Ivan Shishkin produced hundreds of paintings, thousands of studies and drawings and a large number of engravings. For contemporaries, Shishkin’s personality embodied Russian nature itself; they called him “forest tzar”, “old pine tree”, and “lonely oak”. Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was born into the family of a merchant. His father, a self-made and broad-minded man, after long hesitations, supported his son's desire to become an artist. In 1852-1856, Shishkin studied in the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture, in 1856-1860, he continued his studies in St. Petersburg, in the Academy of Arts. He made rapid progress and got all the awards the Academy offered. Having received a Major Gold Medal for two pictures with the same name View of Valaam Island. Kukko. (1860) and an Academy grant for studies abroad, Shishkin spent 3 years (1862-1865) in Germany, Switzerland, Czech, France, Belgium and Holland. Gradually he got disappointed in his foreign teachers and European authorities in landscape painting. Now he felt free and independent and longed to return home, to Russia. During his stay abroad Shishkin engaged in lithography and etching. His numerous pen drawings caught the eye of the Dusseldorf public and critics by their virtuoso hatching and filigree treatment of detail. In 1865, Shishkin painted his View near Dusseldorf for which he was awarded the title of Academician and which was shown at the 1867 World Fair in Paris. In 1865, he returned to Russia and settled in St. Petersburg, where he joined the Itinerants’ Society of Traveling Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki). One of his first masterpieces Noon in the Neighbourhood of Moscow (1869) critics called “song of joy”. He always preferred to draw daytime scenes, full of sunlight and life. Pine Forest in Viatka Province (1872), Rye (1878), Path in a Forest (1880), Oaks (1887), Coniferous Forest. Sunny Day. (1895). His scrupulous reproduction of nature stood in sharp contrast to the academic canons of landscape painting. For his loving approach to detail some critics called his works colored pictures, which lack of life. But despite such attention to details Shishkin’s paintings do not fall apart, but give full and finished impression. Shichkin had a troubled private life, twice he fell in love and married and twice his wives died. His sons also died. But never Shishkin allowed his sorrows appear on his canvases. His last work is Mast-Tree Grove (1898). He died in his studio at the easel with newly begun canvas. Among the Russian landscape painters Shishkin was the staunchest and most consistent exponent of the materialistic aesthetics – to depict nature in all its pure, unadorned beauty. His role in Russian art did not lose its significance even in the years, which saw the appearance of splendid landscapes by Isaac Levitan, Valentin Serov and Constantin Korovin. Despite the fact that he espoused different aesthetic principles and advocated a different artistic system, Shishkin enjoyed an indisputable authority among young Russian painters of the late 19th century. This may perhaps be due to the fact that Sisley straddled two different cultures, having been born to English parents in France and later dividing his time between the two countries. As such, though he worked as one of the key figures in French Impressionism, he remained something of an outsider. Unlike many of his peers, who examined urban life, industrialization, and people, Sisley was almost exclusively a painter of landscapes, a subject from which he rarely strayed. What's more, there is a moodiness and distinct colorism in his works that suggest an influence from earlier periods of English and French art, especially the Barbizon school. Stepan Kolesnikov: A collection of 71 paintings (HD) Description: "Stepan Kolesnikov was born into a peasant family in the village of Adrianople of the Yekaterinoslav Province of the Slavyanoserbsk District on July 11, 1879. The boy showed his art gifts early in childhood. He took first painting classes from visiting isographs. As early as 1896 his drawings were selected to the All-Russian exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod and won the municipal council’s award as a grant for receiving the appropriate education. In 1897 Stepan Kolesnikov entered the Odessa Art School, one of the best art educational institutions of Russia of that time. At school he soon got friendly with future classics of Soviet painting, such as Isaac Brodsky, Mitrofan Martyshchenko (Grekov), and the future classic of Russian avant-garde David Burliuk. Later he studied at the Academy of Arts and graduated it with the artist title and the right for oversea creative trip. His graduation work The Spring pooled the results of his numerous student landscapes, which he brought from his frequent trips to the south of Russia, Bessarabia, the Balkans, and the Carpathians. Stepan Kolesnikov visited France and Italy and soon afterwards made a long trip to Turkestan and China. The artist’s favourite subject matter was the condition of the South Russian nature in its exuberant awakening, such as thawing of snow, high waters, cheerful spring days, and the like. He was also fond of painting home compositions occupied with people and pets. During World War I he resorted to the military subject, and created a range of canvasses that got positive responses. Till the times of great turmoil (October Revolution of 1917, the Civil War) the prolific artist worked a lot and regularly participated in numerous exhibitions. Stepan Kolesnikov was highly appreciated by art critics and often got awards. In 1920 Stepan Kolesnikov emigrated from the storming country and settled in Serbia. Soon he became professor of the Belgrade Academy of Arts. In the 1920s he organized several personal exhibitions in the countries of Europe. At the same time he created a range of serious monumental works. A plafond painting of over 80 square meters for the Opera House in Belgrade was among them. The artist’s works are kept in the leading museums of the country. Little is known about his life and activities abroad. In the last 12 years of his life the artist suffered from Parkinsonism. Joseph Mallord William "J. M. W." Turner, RA (baptised 14 May 1775[a] -- 19 December 1851) was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.[1] Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. It is generally believed he was born between late April and early May. Description: "Constable was, with Joseph Turner, the major English landscape painter of the 19th century. He is best known for his paintings of the English countryside.

John Constable was born on 11 June 1776 in East Bergholt in Suffolk, the son of a prosperous miller. He was educated at Dedham Grammar School, then worked for his father's business. He persuaded his father to send him to study at the Royal Academy Schools, which he entered in 1799.

In 1816, after much opposition from her father, Constable married Maria Bicknell. She suffered from tuberculosis, so they lived in Hampstead in north London, which was thought to be healthier than central London. In the early 1820s they began frequent visits to Brighton, also for Maria's health.

Constable believed that his paintings should come as directly as possible from nature. He made hundreds of outdoor oil sketches, capturing the changing skies and effects of light. He was happiest painting locations he knew well, particularly in his native Suffolk. He also frequently painted in Salisbury, Brighton and Hampstead, making numerous studies of the clouds over the Heath.

Maria's death in 1828 was devastating for Constable and left him responsible for their seven children. The following year he was belatedly elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Constable received little other recognition in Britain in his lifetime, but was much better known in France. In 1824, 'The Hay Wain' won a gold medal at the Salon in Paris and Constable had a profound influence on French Romantic artists.

Constable died in London on 31 March 1837."
