Complete Summary of the Basic Steps when Project Planning and then use of the baseline when Tracking and Reporting project status. What we cover is ideal for non-project managers caught-up in the conduct of a project as well as those new-to-project management role and everyone needing a ‘big-picture’ view of how all the bits fit together. Content is aligned to both PMP (IE PMP PMBoK Guide) and PRINCE2® environments; it gives good context to those making in depth exam preparations. This overview of the steps is the perfect springboard for studying each step's tools and techniques. The framework given works for Agile Sprints in Scrum and Heavy or Civil Engineering projects too. We made this video of the 15 minute summary in the second three day training event we delivered at the Princess Nora University in Riyadh, KSA in Dec 2014 because the folk on the previous course said "that would be good to have in a video!" 'The Complete Summary of Project Planning and Tracking Steps' sets out the sequence of Project Management actions to create a team equipped to succeed. First we identify stakeholders and capture stakeholder expectations, then workshop expectations into Goal Statements linked to prioritised SMART acceptance criteria. In customer oriented discussions we merge expectations into Goals and Constraints then Decompose the Goal's Scope into Deliverables and attach Product Quality Criteria (as part of concurrent Quality Planning and Configuration Item Identifications) to create a Customer oriented view of project acceptance. In technician oriented discussion we Next decompose Products to Tasks or Activities and Estimate the effort and materials needed to build or buy, Integrate and Deliver each Project Deliverable. A Two Phase Estimating approach is recommended with quick low precision estimates at first being replaced by higher precision estimates when key project drivers like Project Approach, Likely versus Desired schedule etc is known. Throughout we include how to integrate responding to risks into the team’s understanding and the control baseline. Building schedules matches resource needs with availability and business urgency, task durations and task dependencies and thus we can complete a Critical Path Analysis. When all other factors are in place the calculation of the Time Phased expected expenditure profile (Budget) is straight forward. The Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (or BCWS or PV or PC) is our benchmark for reliable control. Equipped with a baseline Planned Value (BCWS or Planned Cost) the comparison of Work Actually Complete (determined by Quality Control's in process 'good job achieved and results recorded') allow contrast of the BCWP (Budgeted cost of Work Performed or ‘Earned Value’) and costs incurred for a reliable indicator of project status. Reliable status determination is an easy capability to reach using the tools and steps summarised here in plain language. The video is only 15 minutes and gives a very thorough summary of all 90% of both PMBoK-G & PRINCE2’s approaches. To present a thorough summary of a big topic in 15 minutes means this class session was less interactive than we would normally run (it’s a 30-90m discussion sometimes!) and of course there is much not said because we had covered it in the 15hrs of discussions before this point.
