Best known for his depictions of rural scenes and winter forests, Moras employed a realist technique while simplifying forms and detail so as to soften the overall effect of his images. Born on January 20, 1856 in Berlin, Germany, Moras went on to study with the painter Hermann Eschke, who specialized in landscape and maritime scenes. He primarily made his work in Brandenburg, which is located on the outskirts of Berlin, though he also made several painting trips to the Netherlands and Italy. He started exhibiting when he was 20 years old, and continued to show work throughout his life. Today, Moras’ paintings can be found mostly in collections in Germany, including the Nationalgalerie Berlin, the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg, and the Kulturhistoriches Museum Magdenburg. Gaston La Touche: A collection of 116 works (HD) Description: "Gaston La Touche, a self-taught artist, became a famous and successful French painter and printmaker. From childhood he was determined to be a painter and was supported in this ambition by his well-to-do parents. He admired Zola and provided drypoint illustrations for his novel L'Assommoir (1879). His first paintings (1880s) were domestic scenes in the style of the Dutch 17th century. They were vigorous, harsh and sombre and met with no success: he burnt most of them in 1891. The influence of his friend Felix Bracquemond prompted him to discard his early style and to use the colours favoured by the Impressionists; his brushwork is characterized by small, petal-like strokes of colour. In 1890 he showed Phlox and Peonies (untraced), both colourful scenes of women, children and flowers, at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which brought him immediate success. His fetes galantes and singeries recall French 18th-century art, and he also specialized in Breton subjects, such as Pardon in Brittany (1896; Chicago, IL, Art Institute). He was elected a member of the Societe National des Beaux Arts in 1890, having already been a member of the Societaire des Artistes Francais since 1883. He received numerous medals at these societies, as well as at the Exposition Universelles in 1889 and 1900. After receiving the Legion d'honneur in 1900 (he was later awarded the great honour of being elected an ‘officer’ of this select band), La Touche was given several official commissions for large-scale decorative schemes. These included four views of fetes at Versailles (never installed) for the Palais d'Elysee (1906; Paris, Pal. Luxembourg), four decorative panels showing landscapes with figures (untraced) for the Ministere de l'Agriculture, four pictures representing the arts (never installed) for the Ministere de la Justice (exhibited Salon 1910; Paris, Pompidou) and decorations for the dining room of the liner La France (executed 1912; destroyed in the 1930s). Glowing colours and broad brushstrokes characterize these large canvases, reminiscent of the work of such 18th-century artists as Hubert Robert and Jean-Honore Fragonard. In 1908 La Touche exhibited over 300 works at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris. He painted murals, c. 1910, for the house of the dramatist Edmond Rostand at Cambo, Pyrenees-Atlantiques. Emily Carr: A collection of 196 works (HD) Description: "Canadian Artist and Writer: Emily Carr studied in San Francisco in 1889-95, and in 1899 she travelled to England, where she was involved with the St. Ives group and with Hubert von Herkomer's private school. She lived in France in 1910 where the work of the Fauves influenced the colourism of her work and she came into contact with Frances Hodgkins. Discouraged by her lack of artistic success, she returned to Victoria where she came close to giving up art altogether. However, her contact with the Group of Seven in 1930 resurrected her interest in art, and throughout the 1930s she specialized in scenes from the lives and rituals of Native Americans. She also showed her awareness of Canadian native culture through a number of works representing the British Columbian rainforest. She lived among the native Americans to research her subjects. Art Collections at Waddesdon Manor

Rothschild Collections at Waddesdon Manor As a family, the Rothschilds were the greatest collectors of the 19th century, seeking the highest quality of workmanship and with a keen sense of historical importance. The houses that they built, the interiors they created and the magnificent collections within them became known internationally as the ‘goût Rothschild’. Waddesdon is one of the rare survivors of that splendour. Waddesdon’s internationally famous collection has been formed principally by four members of the family: Baron Ferdinand (1839-1898) who built Waddesdon and created the interiors, his sister Alice (1847-1922), their cousin Edmond (1845-1934) and the present Lord Rothschild (b. 1936). As near contemporaries, Ferdinand, Alice and Edmond – who resided in Paris – shared similar collecting interests and often competed with one another in the auction rooms and dealers’ galleries of Europe. With their strong interest in eighteenth-century France, they each created collections that would be the envy of any of today’s museums. Ferdinand and Edmond, in particular, built lavish residences fitted out with original eighteenth-century interiors in which to show their superb works of art. Masterpieces created by the royal French porcelain manufactory of Sèvres were placed on furniture produced by the most significant French craftsmen of the eighteenth century, much of it made for the royal family and important members of the court. The floors were covered with Savonnerie carpets exclusive to the Crown and walls hung with tapestries from the royal Gobelins and Beauvais workshops on top of sumptuous silk fabrics. Paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by famous Dutch, Flemish and French artists subtly glowed from the walls. Baron Ferdinand also prized eighteenth-century British portraits by Reynolds, Gainsborough and Romney. Today, the collection continues to grow through the patronage of Rothschild family trusts. Additions include several superb paintings by Chardin, Labille-Guiard, Pannini and Callet, a magnificent silver dinner service made for George III and a large collection of Sèvres porcelain sculpture. Significant pieces of contemporary sculpture by Stephen Cox, Angus Fairhurst, Sarah Lucas and Richard Long, for example, can be seen in the garden and at the Windmill Hill complex that houses the Waddesdon Archive and Rothschild Foundation.

Description: "Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov was born on July, 29th, 1881 in Mikhailovskaya-on-Don village near Volgograd (nowadays Uryupinsk District of the Volgograd Region).

His parents were peddlers. When Ilya was yet a pupil of a three-year parish school, he revealed an interest and talent for inventing various mechanical devices and drawing. But at the age of eleven he was already sent to work. At first he served as an errand boy for a fruit seller, and then worked for a merchant, the owner of shops and factories in the town of Borisoglebsk of the Tambov Province. Later Ilya Mashkov recalled: “Day after day from 7 am till 9 pm I had to be on feet. 14 hours! I hated it all”. The only joy for the boy was to copy icons, painting reproductions, popular prints (see Russian lubok) and make commercial posters. The boy ordered a box of oil paints from a newspaper ad. However, when the art teacher of the Borisoglebsky man's grammar school asked him if he wanted to study drawing, the boy enquired: “Does one learn it?”

In 1890 he entered the Moscow school of painting, sculpturing and architecture, where he studied under V. Serov, K. Korovin, and A. Vasnetsov. As a student Mashkov showed his eccentric character and finally was expelled from the school.

In his student years the artist traveled a lot and visited a number of countries of the Western Europe, as well as Turkey and Egypt.

He adjoined the Russian fauvist artists. In 1910 he took an active part in organization of the first exhibition of Bubnovy Valet and was the member of this famous association of artists and participated in all the later exhibitions. “We wanted our paintings to be mighty, satiated with plentiful colors” - Mashkov said about the purpose of Bubnovy Valet.

Apart from that Ilya Mashkov actively participated in the renewed association of Mir Iskusstva (Realm of Art).

Mashkov’s main genre was still-life, but he also resorted to landscape and portraiture.

He lived in Moscow, but often visited his native village, especially in the 1930s.

Already in his early works Mashkov revealed an exceptional talent for build the form by color – dense, powerful, and expressively depicting the material flesh of the world. He was very much into drawing and was fond of hyperbole, exaggeration, and gigantism.

Later he opened his own art studio and taught artists himself. Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov died on March, 20th, 1944 in Moscow."
