New RDX pairs turbo power with 10-speed automatic and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive with torque vectoring. After teasing us with a near-production prototype at the Detroit show and revisions earlier this month, Acura has fully revealed the 2019 RDX SUV. First I want to say thank you to Acura for not taking as long to roll out the RDX as it did the NSX. That was painful. Then again, while the NSX might be the company’s purported soul, the RDX and MDX are the lifeblood of the Acura brand, representing two-thirds of their sales. The RDX has done well since its 2013 redesign moved it to conventional V6 power and larger size. This third generation increases the size yet again, but shrinks the engine and goes back to turbo power, now paired with an all-new platform exclusive to Acura. The new platform leverages high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel, ring-frame design, and pairs it with MacPherson strut front suspension, five-link independent rear suspension and available adaptive dampers. The wheelbase is 2.6 inches longer and overall length 2.5 inches longer (108.3 wheelbase and 186.9 length) than the 2018 RDX, which opens up passenger space and grows trunk space by over three cubic feet. With more mass to carry around, Acura wanted more torque, so replacing the V6 is the 2.0T VTEC turbo we’re starting to see in every Honda product. Direct injection, variable valve timing and turbocharging contribute to 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, down 7 hp, but up 28 lb-ft, and it comes on from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm (previously 252 lb.-ft. at 4,900 rpm), so it should get moving easily. After years of an identity crisis, Acura takes a giant step forward to remind buyers who they are as a brand. Applying all kinds of new technology, luxury, and performance to the brand's best-selling RDX for 2019. Key improvements include an all-new infotainment system, next generation super handling AWD, and more luxury and technology inside the spacious cabin. Acura was able to do all this while preserving the best aspect of the RDX, the price. Starting at $37,300 and toping out around $48,000 fully loaded, the 3rd generation RDX easily undercuts top European rivals by as much as $10,000 dollars, all while still delivering the luxury and tech by its rivals with the added bonus of strong reliability and resale value that the Acura brand has always delivered.

Now comes an all-new model, with the 2019 RDX marking the third generation of Acura’s premium crossover. Arriving on dealer lots this week, the RDX has fresh technology, enhanced safety features, striking design inside and out, and a few surprises. What hasn’t changed is the RDX’s impressive value for the dollar. We’ll get to that, but first let’s detail what else is new and compelling in the latest RDX.
The all-new RDX is similar to the very first in terms of its power train. That’s because the 2019 RDX has swapped its former 3.5-liter V6 for a new, 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. This is similar to what almost every other rival has also done, and harkens back to the original RDX with its turbo-4. Moving from a V6 to a 4-cylinder enables better efficiency while not sacrificing power thanks to advancements that have made the smaller engines just as or more powerful than a traditional V6.
In the RDX, the new 4-cylinder engine makes nearly the same horsepower as the old V6–272 vs. the outgoing model’s 279–and a lot more torque. The new engine has a stout 280 lb-ft of torque, vs. the 252 in the outgoing model. The fuel efficiency improvement isn’t as drastic, but it’s an improvement nonetheless, increasing 1 mpg combined for both front- and all-wheel drive models.
And that brings us to the Acura’s all-wheel drive system. This latest RDX again boasts Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which replaces the previous model’s simpler AWD system. SH-AWD differentiates itself with torque vectoring. Now in its fourth generation, Acura’s SH-AWD can send up to 70 percent of power to the rear wheels, and of that power, up to 100 percent can go to either rear wheel. This enables superior traction in wet or slippery environments, plus more of a sports-car feel.
Also new is the transmission. The first-gen RDX used a 5-speed automatic. Just over a decade later, that number has doubled, with the 2019 RDX among the latest new car to use a 10-speed automatic.
A host of other improvements are also part of the package, from Acura’s Integrated Dynamics System that allows you to adjust drive modes on the fly to sound-deadening materials and a host of active safety and driving equipment. Acura invited us to Whistler in British Columbia to get a first impression of the all-new RDX. Following are our first impressions.
