Rembrandt van Rijn: A collection of 546 paintings (HD)

Rembrandt van Rijn: A collection of 546 paintings (HD) Description: "Rembrandt van Rijn, in full Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Rembrandt originally spelled Rembrant (born July 15, 1606, Leiden, Netherlands—died October 4, 1669, Amsterdam) Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty. Early in his career and for some time, Rembrandt painted mainly portraits. Although he continued to paint—and etch and, occasionally, draw—portraits throughout his career, he did so less frequently over time. Roughly one-tenth of his painted and etched oeuvre consists of studies of his own face as well as more-formal self-portraits, a fact that has led to much speculation. The core of Rembrandt’s oeuvre, however, consists of biblical and—to a much lesser extent—historical, mythological, and allegorical “history pieces,” all of which he painted, etched, or sketched in pen and ink or chalk. Seen over his whole career, the changes in Rembrandt’s style are remarkable. His approach to composition and his rendering of space and light—like his handling of contour, form, and colour, his brushwork, and (in his drawings and etchings) his treatment of line and tone—are subject to gradual (or sometimes abrupt) transformation, even within a single work. The painting known as Night Watch (1640/42) was clearly a turning point in his stylistic development. These changes are not the result of an involuntary evolution; rather they should be seen as documenting a conscious search in pictorial and narrative respects, sometimes in discussion, as it were, with his great predecessors. Rembrandt quickly achieved renown among Dutch art lovers and an art-buying public for his history paintings and etchings, as well as his portraits and self-portraits. His unusual etchings brought him international fame during his lifetime, and his drawings, which in fact were done as practice exercises or as studies for other works, were also collected by contemporary art lovers. According to the myth that evolved after his death, Rembrandt died poor and misunderstood. It is true that by the end of his life his realism had been supplanted by Classicism and had become unfashionable in Holland. Nevertheless, his international reputation among connoisseurs and collectors only continued to rise. Certain artists in 18th-century Germany and Venice even adopted his style. He was venerated during the Romantic era and was considered a forerunner of the Romantic movement; from that point he was regarded as one of the greatest figures in art history. In the Netherlands itself, his fortunes have once again risen, and he has become a symbol of both greatness and Dutch-ness." Feel free to subscribe!

Moses Soyer: A collection of 49 paintings (HD)

Moses Soyer: A collection of 49 paintings (HD) Description: "Moses Soyer was a significant figure in the American realist movement at the beginning of the 20th century. Soyer was born in Russia in 1899. He and his family, including his twin brother, Raphael Soyer, also a well-known artist, immigrated to New York in 1912. Soyer’s everyday experiences in New York, with its diverse population and bustling activity, were the primary inspiration for his art. Soyer’s training began at Cooper Union, National Academy of Design, whose formalistic curriculum he left in favor of continuing his studies at Ferrer Art School in Spanish Harlem. There, Soyer studied painting and drawing with the more advanced Ashcan school artists Robert Henri and George Bellows. Artists associated with the Ashcan school in the early years of the twentieth century sought to capture New York scenes through realistic and unglamorized representations of everyday life. Known primarily for his drawings and oil paintings, Soyer had his first solo exhibition in 1926 and was awarded a scholarship enabling him to travel to Europe to study drawing. During the 1930s, when the United States was at the height of the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration, a part of the New Deal, commissioned Soyer to paint murals in government buildings throughout the country. Soyer’s art emphasized the depiction of the natural attitudes, thoughts, and gestures of individuals in performing everyday tasks. Throughout his career, Soyer’s art remained close to the representational rendering and simple subject matter of the Ashcan artists and the realism of Edward Hopper and Thomas Eakins. After World War II, as many artists delved into Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting, Soyer continued to paint within the realist canon and achieved recognition for his work. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1963 and in 1966 to the National Institute of Arts and Letters." --- SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: LearnFromMasters01@gmail.com SUPPORT MY WORK AT: https://www.patreon.com/LearnFromMasters (By donating at least 50$ you'll have acces to all artworks (JPEG files) collection already posted on this channel!) Arseny Meshchersky: A collection of 115 paintings (HD)

Arseny Meshchersky: A collection of 115 paintings (HD) Description: "His parentage is not known for certain but, based on certain references in family records to a young boy with artistic talents, it is believed that he was one of the noble Meshcherskys or, at least, that he was raised as one of them. By 1854, when he was only twenty, he appears to have received a thorough artistic training. At that time, he was enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts where he studied with Fyodor Bruni, Sokrat Vorobiev and Timofey Neff. The following year, he participated in his first academic exhibition. Then suddenly, in 1857, he dropped out of the Academy and moved to Switzerland (at his own expense or that of a patron) to improve his painting skills by studying with the landscape painter Alexander Kalam (1810-1864). Two years later, he exhibited at the Academy, winning a gold medal, the title of Artist First-Class and a stipend that allowed him to travel at government expense. In 1864 he returned home, although he continued to travel extensively and, three years later, he was chosen to be part of the entourage accompanying Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich on his voyage around the world. In 1876, he was named a Professor at the Academy. In 1879, he became ill with pneumonia and developed complications, hovering close to death for almost two months. He recovered, but suffered from breathing difficulties for the rest of his life, especially in the winter. In 1886, he was awarded the Order of St. Anna, Third Degree. He once again began to travel, visiting Turkey, Greece, Italy and Switzerland over the course of the next twelve years. In mid-November 1902, the newspaper Новое время (New Times) published an obituary (between advertisements for soap and gloves) noting that "Arseny Meshchersky, Professor of landscape painting, who once enjoyed great popularity...", had died from an attack of "asthma"." --- MUSIC: Chris Zabriskie - Laserdisc Laserdisc by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/honor/ Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: LearnFromMasters01@gmail.com SUPPORT MY WORK AT: https://www.patreon.com/LearnFromMasters LIST OF ARTISTS already posted on LearnFromMasters: https://goo.gl/hri4HE --- Thank you so much for your support!

Peter Lely: A collection of 165 paintings (HD)

Peter Lely: A collection of 165 paintings (HD) Description: "Lely was born Pieter van der Faes to Dutch parents in Soest, Westphalia, on 14 September 1618, the son of Johan van der Faes and Abigail van Vliet. As Pieter Lely (Lely being the name of the street in a fasionable quarter of The Hague where his forebears had settled, the house featuring a lily carved on the gable) he is recorded in the minutes of the Guild of Saint Luke in Harlem for October-November 1637 as one of the pupils of Frans Pieters de Grebber. Unlike many of his contemporaries he never visited Italy. When Lely came to London during the early years of the Civil War (the exact date is unknown), his bent was for pictures and historical compositions. He continued to paint such works and portraits of musicians with their instruments until the early 1650s. But from the start he accommodated himself to the native demand for portraiture, espoused by aristocratic patrons who, supporting the Parliamentary cause, had remained in London. In 1647 he became a member of the Painter-Stainers Company and by 1654 was described as "the best artist in England." After the Restoration in 1660 Lely was recognized as Van Dyck's successor as court and society painter; he became Principal Painter to King Charles II in 1661 and was granted naturalization in 1662. With rapidly increasing demand he built up an elaborate studio organization and method by the early 1670s; a pose would be selected from an existing set of numbered postures, he would paint the head from life, chalk in the pose, and lay in the colors, leaving the rest to one of his many assistants. His output was immense. Lely worked unremittingly and, emulating Van Dyck, led a grand and extravagant life in his house on the piazza, Covent Garden. A lover of music and close friend of poets, he also amassed a fine collection of paintings and sculpture and a huge collection of drawings, all bought largely at the sales following the dispersal of collections after the Civil War. He also purchased paintings and drawings by Van Dyck from the artist's widow. Lely's collection was the first in England to be systematically stamped with a mark. The collection was sold after his death to pay off debts, and at the time (1682) this was by far the most important public auction of pictures in England. Nothing is known of his mistress, Ursula, whom he married after the birth of two children and who died in childbirth, with her infant, in 1674. In the later 1670s his career was threatened by the increasing success of an ambitious young rival, Godfrey Kneller, who had come to England in 1674, but Lely remained in favor and was knighted in 1680. He died in London on 7 December 1680." --- MUSIC: Kevin MacLeod - Drone in D Drone in D by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200044 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?sub_confirmation=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LearnFromMasters/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+LearnFromMasters Contact: LearnFromMasters01@gmail.com SUPPORT MY WORK AT: https://www.patreon.com/LearnFromMasters LIST OF ARTISTS already posted on LearnFromMasters: https://goo.gl/hri4HE --- Thank you so much for your support!

Ferdinand Bol: A collection of 110 paintings (HD)

Description: "A prosperous surgeon's son, Ferdinand Bol first studied locally in his native Dordrecht, and then became Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn's pupil in Amsterdam, where he settled. Bol witnessed a document concerning Rembrandt's wife Saskia's inheritance in 1640, a responsibility that suggests that by then Bol was probably no longer a student but a full-fledged assistant.

After having risen quickly through the ranks in Rembrandt's highly productive studio, Bol established himself as an independent master around 1642. He imitated Rembrandt's style so closely that some works were mistaken for Rembrandt's for centuries afterward. Although his style changed, throughout his career Bol painted the same subjects as Rembrandt: histories, portraits--often with sitters posed by a window--and exotically costumed single figures.

Around 1650 Bol's taste drifted to more "modern" trends: His palette lightened, and his figures grew more noble and elegant. No other painter in Amsterdam equaled him in receiving official commissions; his 1653 marriage to a woman from an influential family undoubtedly helped. Among Bol's most important works were classicizing Baroque paintings of historical subjects for Amsterdam's new town hall. After marrying a wealthy widow in 1669, he gave up painting."
