Beautiful place on the estuary. No access by car short walk along the canal tow path. Food is good but small portions and expensive. Great for families. A great pub to stop at on foot, bike or boat. Lots of outdoor space, you can even camp there and dogs are welcome. Great selection of nice food that is served promptly and presented well. Staff delightful. We visit here quite often when in the area.
It is a lovely setting right on the edge of the Exe Estuary. The benefit of The Turf is without question the beautiful location. I'd only visit in the summer though when you can sit outside with the beautiful estuary views. We've only ever cycled here, and am not sure it's accessible any other way. Food ordering is fairly tiresome, but the food is delivered wonderfully with bright and cheery staff. I love this place. We took the lunchtime ferry and enjoyed well filled sandwiches on picnic tables beside the lock.
The serving system is a bit laborious: you queue at the bar for drinks, take them to your table then return to a cramped food service area to order your food. You get given an alarm so I returned to the food area only to find that a waiter was wandering around outside with my sandwiches.
There is p,entry of seating both inside and out. Interesting little willow wind breaks are dotted around. There is one yurt at one end available to hire but looking dark inside and rather on public display outside though with great views.
The pub is fairly remote: accessible by ferry at limited times because of the low tides. Lots of cyclists and some walkers use the tow path track. There is no road access. There were 2 canoeists having used the Exeter canal route. The lock is infrequently used and is difficult to gain admittance, opened only by pre arrangement and there are further swing bridge systems towards Exeter Quay itself.
An interesting visit, best as a lunch stop though it did appear to hold some outdoor music events. Own or manage this property?
